Fun Facts Learn about the environment

Learning about the environment doesn’t have to be boring!
Here are some fun facts that you can share with your little ones to get them thinking.

DID YOU KNOW?

1. Recycling one aluminum can save enough energy to run a TV for three hours —
or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.

2. During the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 12-ounce aluminum cans are made.

3. To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.

4. Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.

5. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!

6. Americans use 2,500,000 plastic bottles every hour! Most of them are thrown away!

7. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000
sea creatures every year!

8. The U.S is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year.
This means that 5% of the world’s people generate 40% of the world’s waste.

9. Many well-known stars are going green and doing things that show that they care about the
environment including Orlando Bloom who is building an eco-friendly house.

10. Even cleaners and body products labeled as natural can still have yucky chemicals in them that
can harm the environment– and you, too! Read the ingredients with your parents to make sure that what
you’re using is good for you and the world around us.
